In Vancouver, Canada, a project of special social housing has just been built. Made by the “Atira Women’s Resource Society”, this social housing project has been built recycling shipping containers.
The housing project consists of a building of 3 floors and 12 apartments. Although many houses may seem small following the conventional standards, about 26m2 (280 ft2), the women of this association are very satisfied, because for the first time they’ll have their own home.
Half of the homes will be for the people with low income salaries and the other half for old ladies. The fact of using shipping containers to build the structure, instead of using concrete, has saved a lot of money to the constructors, this could be the model for future low cost social housing.
The CEO of the Atira association , Janice Abbott, said, ” Atira has had the vision and tenacity to always carry this project forward, even against the criticism and the opposition that we had. ” “We are very grateful to the investors who have helped us , the building and the rooms are much better looking than we had originally thought ! “
The use of shipping containers as a construction material to build the homes , has helped the organization to achieve their initial financial budgets without sacrificing the quality .
