Due to the lack of accommodation for students in the city of Johannesburg , South Africa, the authorities decided to seek a new solution to this problem , similar to the solution adopted by the student city with containers made in Holland, they chose to use these silos for grain storage as appartments, increasing also the housing surface through the use of the shipping containers.
375 individual appartments configures the “mill junction” , many of these apartments are into the silos which have been ut to add some windows . In addition to these appartments numerous common spaces are included, which they are very useful for the students , such as libraries, leisure and rest areas , and web – cafes.
To increase the capacity of the rehabilitated silos as housing, the containers that you see in the photos surround the 11 silos and also serve as student apartments. These colorful painted containers are responsible of improving the beautiful Johannesburg skyline.
