This is the “Onagawa temporary container housing” designed and created by “Shigeru Ban Architects”, a temporary shelter built on a sports court for the residents of Onagawa, designed and built due to the lack of flat surfaces to build in this city.
The apartments are quite small, which is common in Japan and further exaggerated in this case. The shelter provides 3 different types of housing, 20, 30 and 40M2 for families of 1-2, 3-4 and more than 4 people respectively. To help this lack of space the complex has spacious public areas, such as the ones that we can see in the pictures that accompany this post.
The residential buildings are built with shipping containers of 20 feet, of 3 stories high. The containers are ideal to create complexes of this type, because they are so cheap and symmetric. Of course, this resort is also very resistant against any seismic tremor.
